Do not let your adorning be external - the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear - but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. 1 Peter 3:3-4Being a female all my life, I understand where this verse is coming from and why it is important for it to be included in the Bible. Deep down inside every woman - young or old-, whether they want to admit it or not, strives to be as beautiful as they can. When this is actually thought about, secular beauty is such an odd thing to chase after, but yet a whole gender, half of the human race, makes that their goal in life. In some cultures or social groups beauty can be defined by something as simple as wearing your hair in a different style or putting on some mascara. However, some women go to more extreme lengths as to surgically putting silicon in their body to enhance certain features or wrapping their necks with a golden colored metal to form a collar to make their necks longer or even forever ruining the structure of their foot by folding it over time to wear its a fraction of its normal size so it can fit into special shoes. Sadly, this is only a small list of ways people try to be beautiful.
It is absolutely insane how far people will go in order to look good to those around them or to be accepted in their culture! If only more people would realize that whatever you are on the outside doesn't matter. Men and women both need to grasp this. I think maybe even men more than women. Think about it. Women only strive to be beautiful so that their chances of attracting a husband will be enhanced. I don't care if you say you do such things because you have fun with it. Of course you do! It's instinct to want to do so so that you can find a man to reproduce and create the next generation with. This is why everyone who is a human being needs to realize and grasp that what other humans think is NOT important! God created us the way we are for a reason so we should only care about what he thinks of us and strive with everything we have and are to be as beautiful as possible for the only One that matters.
In the scripture above, Peter writes exactly what you need to do to become absolutely gorgeous in the eyes of God. He doesn't care what you do to your hair, what you put on your face, or what shiny things you adorn yourself with. What God finds completely astounding from His ladies is a quiet and submissive spirit. I know I find this extremely difficult having grown up and living in this day and age. In the American society today, women are encouraged to stand up, speak whatever they want, do whatever they want, and to rise up above men in everything. Women have even developed a reputation for stirring the pot and creating trouble or drama all the time. How is that being submissive and having a quiet spirit? We have totally lost our place as ladies. How are we supposed to be the women God has called us to be when we're trying to be what He's called men to be. We were created differently for a reason! Adam was created from the dust on the ground. The ground is what we depend on for a foundation, therefore men are supposed to be our leaders and who we depend on for support. Eve was taken from Adam's rib. We are just a small portion of that foundation which means we are weaker and therefore need to depend on men. Later on in the same passage of scripture it even says women are the weaker vessels.
If we keep denying ourselves of the beauty that could be our by knowing our role in this world, what is going to be the purpose of having men? Leaders can only lead when they have someone following. If a man is required to lead women, what is he to do with his life if women aren't doing their job following? I find it heartbreaking that the mentality of being a follower is horrible and degrading has corrupted our society. Not everybody can be a leader. However, being a follower i just as important of a role! I guess all I'm trying to say is women need to learn what true beauty is, and why that's so. Let yourself be God's beautiful doll so that you'll be even more to some fortunate man who understands and appreciates that beauty. After all, a daddy is a girls first love, so why not try to impress your heavenly Father first as well?
